What is the Difference Between a Spot and a Stain?
A Spot: A spot is a discoloration on carpet, upholstery or fabric that can be removed.
A Stain: A stain is a deep set spot that cannot be removed. Unlike a spot, a stain is usually permanent and incredibly difficult to remove. Sometime stains are impossible to remove, even by carpet cleaning professionals. You should call a professional if you believe a spot has set too long and become a stain.
What to Do When You Have a Spot:
Ok, so you’ve spilled something on your couch. Or, someone’s had an accident on the carpet. REMAIN CALM. You can get it out. Most spots, if addressed promptly, can be removed. Here is what to do once you have a spot (not stain) on your carpet:
1.) Blot It
Blot the spot with a dry, white towel. Do not rub toward, as the spot will spread. Just blot, blot. blot.
2.) Clean It
Next, wet a towel with water, vinegar, and dish soap. Gently blot the spot with this solution. Make sure you do not spread the spot by rubbing it.
3.) Blot It
Blot the spot again. Be sure to use a dry, white towel when blotting. Keep blotting until you can’t blot anymore.
Following these steps should make your spot go away. Follow these steps and wait 24 hours. If the spot is still there, it could become a stain. That is when you need to call in the professionals for stain removal.
